Frequently Asked Questions

Please refer them to Retriever CARE. The CARE team works cooperatively with students to help them address challenges, identify solutions, and get them connected with other programs and services at UMBC that can provide additional support.

Behaviors of concern are any actions, words, or patterns that cause worry for a person’s wellbeing or safety. These can include emotional distress, behavior changes, substance misuse, self-harm, threats, or anything that feels “off” or alarming. If you’re unsure, it’s always better to report and let Retriever CARE help assess.

Once a referral is submitted, a Retriever CARE staff member reviews the information, conducts a preliminary assessment, and determines the most appropriate response. This may involve outreach to the student, consultation with involved parties, or collaboration with campus partners. All referrals are handled with care and discretion.

Referrals submitted outside of business hours will be reviewed the next business day. If you are reporting an urgent safety concern or someone is in immediate danger, please contact University Police at 410-455-5555 or call 911.

Our role is support. Reporting allows Retriever CARE to connect individuals with the help they need. Many students benefit from early outreach and would not otherwise be connected to resources. Reports are handled discreetly, and students are not penalized simply because someone expressed concern.

Start with care and compassion. Express your concern and listen without judgment. You can offer to connect them with Retriever CARE, Retriever Integrated Health (RIH) Counseling Services, or other campus resources. If you’re unsure what to say, you can also consult with us before approaching the student.

You should refer a student to Retriever CARE when a student’s behavior or wellbeing is causing you concern, even if you’re not sure how serious it is. Retriever CARE can help assess the situation and determine next steps. Early reporting helps us offer support before challenges escalate.

We’re here to help! You can contact Retriever CARE for consultation and guidance, even if you’re not submitting a formal referral. We’re happy to discuss your concerns and offer strategies for approaching the situation.
