Retriever CARE fosters the wellbeing and success of students (undergraduate and graduate), faculty, staff, and the broader UMBC community through proactive outreach, equitable care coordination, and early intervention. By addressing a spectrum of concerns and promoting mental health awareness, the team works to reduce barriers, support holistic wellness, and cultivate a safe, compassionate, and inclusive campus environment.
We envision a campus community where every individual receives person-centered, coordinated, and compassionate support—empowering them to improve their wellbeing and reach their fullest potential.

No immediate safety concerns, but the student is struggling and would benefit from support. Submit a referral:
How to refer someone when you’re concerned about their well-being.
- An electronic referral is submitted to Retriever CARE by the individual who needs help, or by someone who is concerned about another person.
- The Retriever CARE team reaches out and offers the person who was referred a time to meet for a supportive conversation. Retriever CARE provides coordinated support and ensures that they are connected with appropriate on- and off-campus resources.
- When there are no additional concerns for the referred person, the case is considered closed.
- Referrals can be submitted by anyone who is affiliated with UMBC: student, faculty, staff, family member, friend, or community member. Once the referral is received, the referrer will receive an email confirming receipt.
- If you have additional information or want to talk with a Retriever CARE Team member, email (care@umbc.edu) or call (410-455-2770).
- In most cases, meeting with Retriever CARE staff is optional, the exception being when there is a safety concern.
